First off, What is the Purpose of Engine Oil?

First and foremost, the oil's job is to lubricate the intervals; all the moving parts inside your Jeep's engine, like the pistons and valves, etc. All these parts are moving thousands of times per second, creating a lot of friction. This friction causes your engine to reach temperatures upwards of 200 degrees Fahrenheit. And that's the average operating temperature! In fact, with old, dirty oil, your operating temperature can rise significantly and lead to overheating. Old oil can also lead to sludge build-up, especially if your Jeep is sitting for long periods of time. Sludge is a black, gel-like substance made up of water, old oil, and dirt that can cause engine seize-ups, oftentimes marking the end of the engine's life. By keeping your oil clean, your engine will be clean, free of excessive heat and sludge! Your engine will thank you by keeping you on the road for years to come. Remember, a clean engine is a healthy engine!

Hypothetically, What Would Happen if I Don't Get an Oil Change?

Over time, the oil inside your engine will break down. And, unfortunately, it's inevitable. When this breakdown happens, you may start to notice increased exhaust fumes, decreased acceleration, rough idling, a decrease in gas mileage, and more engine noise than is usual. While the possibility of the oil breaking down is inevitable, you have control over it. By simply getting an oil change, you are removing the old oil, along with water, dirt, and road debris that could be contaminating it, and replacing it with clean oil with all the necessary properties to help keep your engine healthy for thousands of miles.

So, How Can I Tell if I Need an Oil Change?

While some newer Jeep models come with an oil change reminder on the digital instrument cluster, the best way to tell if you need an oil change is to go straight to the source, the dipstick that dips into the oil pan. We advise that you check your oil when the engine has been off for at least 20 minutes. First, pull the dipstick and wipe the oil off before sticking it back into the tube. Then, pull it out again and look at the end of the stick. You'll see two dots about an inch apart. The lower one is the Low marker, and the top one is the Full marker. You'll want your oil level to be at least halfway between the two dots. If the oil only comes up to the low line or is dry, time to get an oil change! If it's between halfway and the full dot, you're safe. If it's well above the full dot, we recommend coming down to the service center to get it checked out by a service professional.
